Heffernan First Aid Course Descriptions:

Standard First Aid

Standard First Aid provides comprehensive training covering all aspects of first aid and CPR. Course is designed for those who require a more in-depth understanding of first aid including: legal implications of first aid treatment, spinal injuries, heat or cold injuries, bone and joint injuries, chest injuries, and medical emergencies. Course is 16 hours in length based on a group of 12 candidates. Includes CPR-C certification. Recognized by Ontario's Workplace Safety & Insurance Board.

Emergency First Aid

Emergency First Aid is for people who want a general knowledge of first aid principles and the emergency treatment of injuries. Skills include: victim assessment, CPR, choking and what to do for external bleeding, heart attack, stroke wounds and burns. Course is 8 hours in length based on a group of 12 candidates. Includes CPR-B certification. Recognized by Ontario's Workplace Safety & Insurance Board.

Basic First Aid

Basic First Aid includes how to contact emergency medical services, rescue breathing, how to treat choking and minor injuries. Course is 3-4 hours in length based on a group of 12 candidates.

CPR

CPR-A (Adult) teaches how to do CPR and choking procedures for adults and includes the importance of early defibrillation and how to use an Automated External Defibrillator.

CPR-B (Adult, Child & Infant) teaches parents, grandparents, babysitters, or child care workers the CPR and choking procedures for adults, children and infants. CPR-B includes the importance of early defibrillation and how to use an Automated External Defibrillator.

CPR-C (Adult, Child & Infant) covers all aspects of CPR skills and theory for adult, child and infants, including two-rescuer CPR skills. CPR-C includes the importance of early defibrillation and how to use an Automated External Defibrillator.

CPR-HCP (Adult, Child & Infant, AR, AED, BVM) covers all aspects of CPR including rescue breathing and the use of Automated External Defibrillator and Bag Valve Mask. This Health Care Provider (HCP) level is designed specifically for those who as part of the job description as Health Care Providers have a duty to respond to medical emergencies (e.g., doctors, nurses, paramedics, and allied health care professionals).

Anaphylaxis Rescuer

Anaphylaxis Rescuer certifies a candidate in the prevention and first aid treatment of anaphylaxis using auto-injectors. Ideal for parents, school teachers, camp staff, day-care workers and first-aiders who require annual review.

Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

AED builds on the skills learned in CPR and first aid courses, and provides knowledge of how the heart works and what goes wrong when defibrillation is required. Participants learn when and how to operate an automated external defibrillator including AED maintenance, data management, and reporting protocols required following an incident.  Prerequisite: Lifesaving Society CPR-A or higher certification.

Airway Management

Airway Management certification provides senior and experienced lifeguards with specific knowledge and training in the use of oxygen, suction devices, oral airways and masks/bag-valve-masks. Prerequisite: Standard First Aid.

Babysitters Training Course

Heffernan First Aid is a facilitator of the Canada Safety Council’s Babysitters Training Course. 

This 12-hour course is designed for those who are at least 12 years old or turning 12 within the calendar year. Note: Students must attend all sessions and establish a passing grade of 75 per cent on the final examination in order to receive their certificate.

Becoming a trained babysitter can help prevent injuries and promote the responsible management of common situations that may arise while children are under your care!

The course material covers such topics as: Becoming a successful babysitter; Caring for children from three months to school-age; The behaviour and misbehaviour of children; Handling Emergencies; Caring for a sick or injured child; Prevention and basic First Aid

Program fee: $75.00 per person (based on minimum required registrants), includes student manual

NEW!

Home Alone Program

Heffernan First Aid is a facilitator of the Canada Safety Council’s Home Alone Program which is designed to provide children 10 years of age and older with the necessary skills and knowledge to be safe and responsible when home alone for short periods of time. It will help them understand how to prevent problems, handle real-life situations, and keep them safe and constructively occupied. The course material covers such topics as: Establishing a routine; House Key is your responsibility; Strangers; Telephone; Emergencies; Basic First Aid; Internet Safety

Program is 3.5 hours in length and focuses on small group discussions, problem solving, role-playing, and instructor-led demonstrations. Please dress comfortably!

Program fee: $48.00 per person (based on minimum required registrants), includes student manual and certificate

Infant CPR and Obstructed Airway

Infant CPR and Obstructed Airway Workshop is informational and hands-on! Learn cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills and the signs, symptoms and care of choking, non-breathing infants (new born to one year of age). An excellent workshop for new parents, grandparents, older siblings and those who care for little ones or would like a thorough refresher. Workshop will also include a discussion on prevention and tips to keep in mind when baby begins to be on the move and eat solids. A detailed coloured handout will be provided. This workshop is baby friendly! 

Workshop is 1.5 hours in length and will include floor time practicing with indant manikins. Please dress comfortably!

Workshop fee: $35.00 per person (based on minimum required registrants)

Infant and Child CPR and Obstructed Airway

Our Infant and Child CPR and Obstructed Airway Workshop is informational and hands-on! Learn cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills and the signs, symptoms and care of choking, non-breathing infants (new born to one year of age) and children (1 to 8 years of age). An excellent workshop for new parents, grandparents, older siblings and those who care for little ones or would like a thorough refresher. Workshop will also include a discussion on prevention and tips to keep in mind when baby begins to be on the move and eat solids. A detailed coloured handout will be provided. This workshop is baby friendly! 

Workshop is 2 hours in length and will include floor time practicing with first aid manikins. Please dress comfortably!

Workshop fee: $40.00 per person (based on minimum required registrants)

Allergy 101

Our Allergy Workshop covers prevention and first aid treatment of severe allergic reactions using auto-injectors. Learn how to recognize an allergic reaction and how to prevent and manage the risk of anaphylaxis. Workshop will also include a discussion on allergens. A great workshop for anyone who cares or supervises children, including teachers, daycare providers, parents, grandparents and babysitters. Or for those who know someone with severe allergies. A detailed coloured handout will be provided.

Workshop is 90 minutes in length and will include time practicing with EpiPen trainers. Please dress comfortably!

Workshop fee: $35.00 per person (based on minimum required registrants)


Ouchie 101

Let’s be realistic! When it comes to little ones, an owie, boo boo or ouchie may seem unavoidable. Although many injuries are minor, having the confidence and skills to deal with them calmly and quickly are important. Join us to review a variety of first aid topics such as wounds, head injuries, facial injuries, bone and joint injuries and more. We will discuss the best methods to help when an unfortunate mishap occurs and will talk about the importance of having a first aid kit in the home. This workshop is perfect for parents, grandparents, babysitters, or anyone looking for a review of common first aid injuries. A detailed coloured handout will be provided.

This workshop is 2 hours in length. Bring your questions!

First Aid Skills Refresher

Our First Aid Skills Refresher is a non- certification workshop offering a thorough review of all first aid course content. It is informational and hands-on, utilizing a variety of activities, practical first aid scenarios, mock first aid kits, etc. to review first aid signs and symptoms and treatment. A great workshop for those who would like a thorough review of their first aid skills between certification years.
